Christmas Eve is full of magic, but when it comes to bedtime, it can also be one of the most challenging nights of the year for parents. With the anticipation of Father Christmas’ arrival, sweet treats, and festive fun, it’s no wonder your little one will find it hard to settle down. While telling them Father Christmas won’t stop by until they’re asleep might work, it’s best to have a few more tools in your festive parenting toolkit.
Here are five ways to help your children wind down and fall asleep on Christmas Eve:
1. Encourage active play – earlier in the day
Make sure your little one gets plenty of movement and fresh air during the day. Outdoor time and physical activity can help release all that excitement. Just avoid high-energy play too close to bedtime as it can overstimulate rather than calm.
2. Be mindful of sugar intake
Limit sugary snacks and drinks, particularly in the afternoon and evening. While Christmas is a time for treats, too much sugar too late can lead to a bedtime battle. Opt for festive but low-sugar snacks as the evening winds down.
3. Create a calm, screen-free evening
Turn off all screens at least one hour (ideally two) before bedtime. Instead, create a peaceful pre-sleep routine with quiet games, Christmas-themed books, or gentle music. And if your family sets out snacks for Father Christmas and his reindeer, do this a bit earlier so the excitement doesn’t carry straight into bedtime.
4. Stick to the normal routine
Consistency is key – even on Christmas Eve. Stick to your usual bedtime and follow your normal sleep routine. This helps children feel secure and ready for rest, even when the day has been full of surprises.
5. Stay calm – and maybe sneak in a little magic
Little ones mirror our energy, so try to stay relaxed during bedtime. Keep the tone joyful but soothing. For an extra bit of Christmas magic, consider adjusting the Gro Clock or digital clock slightly so a slightly earlier wake-up won’t break your usual sleep rules!
