As someone who was fairly recently diagnosed with coeliac disease (which means no gluten for me!), I was determined not to let it stop our family from enjoying meals out together. That said, I was (and still am!) understandably nervous at first. Eating out means placing a great deal of trust in other people to prepare your food safely, and that can feel daunting when even small amounts of gluten can make me ill.
At the same time, I didn’t want my family’s dining experiences to feel limited or restricted because of my diagnosis.
That’s why I’ve put together this guide to some of our favourite family-friendly places to eat in Bristol that cater well for food allergies and intolerances in my experience. While every restaurant is different and it’s always important to discuss your dietary requirements with staff before ordering, these are places that have helped me feel more confident about eating out as a family.
The Lounges
The Lounges is known for its extensive menu that includes vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options.
The spacious interiors are great for families, and there are choices suitable for both adults and children. Colouring provided also for the win!
Honest Burgers
Burgers always go down a treat and Honest Burgers offers gluten-free buns and provides detailed allergen information. I can’t seem to find any gluten free bun as good as these! Their onion rings are also the best I’ve tasted!
Their staff are generally well-trained in allergy procedures and can advise on suitable menu choices.
Perfect for families looking for a relaxed meal but service is usually pretty quick if you need to exit quickly if your little ones get bored.
Pizza Express
A reliable family favourite, Pizza Express has comprehensive allergen information and offers gluten-free pizza bases, vegan cheese, and dairy-free dessert options. Also Coelic UK approved!
Staff follow allergy procedures and are familiar with handling dietary requests, making it a reassuring option for many families.
There’s a children’s menu, clearly labelled allergens and Gluten-free and dairy-free choices. Gluten free doughballs?! Yes please!
The Stable
The Stable is another pizza option offering gluten-free pizza bases and vegan cheese, along with clear allergen information. We have enjoyed their relaxed environment and great children’s choices.
Pho Bristol
If your family enjoys Vietnamese food, Pho is an excellent option.
Much of the menu is naturally gluten-free, making it one of the easier places to dine if you’re avoiding gluten. They also cater for dairy-free diets and clearly label allergens throughout the menu.
Children are welcome, and there are plenty of mild dishes suitable for younger diners.
