How to make the transition from cot to bed a smooth one!

Moving your toddler from a cot to a “big bed” is a major milestone – for your whole family! But with the right timing, preparation, and consistency, the transition doesn’t have to be stressful. In this blog, we’ll give you tips to make sure it’s the best time to make the change, how to handle the transition smoothly, and what to do if your little one starts resisting bedtime or exploring their new freedom.

When should you move your toddler to a bed?

One of the most common questions I get from parents is: “When should we move our child into a bed?” And our answer is often: “Not yet.” If your toddler doesn’t yet have independent sleep skills, it’s best to wait. There’s no urgency to move them, many children happily sleep in a cot until age 3 (and beyond), and not a single parent has ever told us they regretted waiting. In fact, most say the opposite!

Why waiting helps:

  • Toddlers learning how to self-settle benefit from the security and structure a cot provides.
  • Making a big change while they’re still adjusting to sleeping through the night can disrupt progress.
  • Once your child can fall asleep independently and is well-rested, the switch to a bed is usually much smoother.

So before you focus on furniture, prioritise the way they fall asleep and a calm bedtime routine.

How to prepare your toddler for the move

If your child is sleeping well, or if you have to move them for a practical reason (like a new sibling on the way), then the next step is preparation. Start by managing expectations and making it a positive experience:

  • Talk it through in an upbeat, age-appropriate way: “You’re getting a new bed soon!”
  • Set a date so they know when it’s happening (and so you don’t spring it on them).
  • If they love being a “big boy” or “big girl,” lean into that language: “Big kids sleep in big beds.”

But all that said, don’t turn it into a huge event. Making too much fuss can create pressure and stress. Keep it light and calm, just another step in growing up.

Let them take ownership

When shopping for the new bed, involve your toddler:

  • Let them choose between two bed styles
  • Ask which colour bedding they prefer
  • Have them help set up the bed or choose a special pillow

Giving your child a sense of ownership helps them feel proud and excited about their new sleep space – and more willing to stay in it!

Keep everything else the same

Big changes can feel overwhelming for toddlers, so once the new bed is in place, avoid making other changes at the same time. That means:

  • Keep the bed in the same position the cot was in
  • Use the same sheets, pillow, or cuddly toy if possible
  • Stick to the same bedtime routine, timing, and mealtime before bed

On the first night (and every night after), try to keep everything as predictable and familiar as possible.

How your toddler might react – and what to do

Once your little one starts sleeping in their bed, they’ll likely react in one of three ways:

1. They sleep perfectly

Lucky you! If your child stays in bed and falls asleep easily, you’ve hit the jackpot!

2. They do well at first, but start testing the boundaries

About a week or two after moving into the bed, your toddler might start:

  • Leaving the room
  • Playing with toys at bedtime
  • Calling out for you repeatedly

3. They resist from night one

Some toddlers go straight into protest mode, wandering, calling, testing rules.

So, what’s the solution?

Consistency. The key is to set boundaries and stick to them. If they get out of bed or call for you:

  1. Calmly explain the consequence
  2. Follow through immediately and gently

Tip: Make sure the consequence matters.

Top tips for a smooth cot-to-bed transition

  • Don’t rush the move – wait until sleep is good
  • Keep your bedtime routine unchanged
  • Prepare your child positively, but don’t overhype
  • Involve them in choosing the bed and bedding
  • Set clear expectations and consequences
  • Follow through with consistency
